When burning resins or incense, take the same precautions as you would burning in an abalone shell or another heatproof vessel.

Place an incense cone or a charcoal disc with the indented side up on top of sand or salt. Break the charcoal in half or quarters if you only want to burn a small bit at a time.

Light the charcoal in the dish or use tongs to light. You will see tiny sparks as it starts to burn. Wait about 5 minutes until the disc is red hot with grey ash over it.

When it is ready, sprinkle about 1/4 tsp of resin, herbs, incense directly on top. Add more when the incense has burned.

When burning your incense, please be sure to place your vessel on a heatproof surface. It gets very hot! A disc will continue to burn for about 30-40 minutes.

Do not light charcoal while it is in your hand. Never leave it burning unattended. Open a door or window. It will be smoky. Always make sure it is completely out when you are done. Cast iron gets very hot!
